Icarus, The Dead Legend (They Don't Tell You Everything)

Hello, dear readers! It's been busy around here this summer, but hopefully, my weekends will be more relaxed as school starts so I'll be able to post here more often!
Anyway, I've always found myself drawn to the mythological story of Icarus. I don't remember where I first heard it, and I don't know why I like it so much, but there it is. There's something about the thought of hopelessly chasing the sun and falling, recklessly, to the cold sea below. Anyway, some more of my feelings on that should be explained more eloquently in the poem below.
For those of you who don't know, here's a brief summary of Icarus's story:

Icarus  (IK-uh-rus)
Icarus (son of Daedalus) dared to fly too near the sun on wings of feathers and wax. Daedalus had been imprisoned by King Minos of Crete within the walls of his own invention, the Labyrinth. But the great craftsman's genius would not suffer captivity. He made two pairs of wings by adhering feathers to a wooden frame with wax. Giving one pair to his son, he cautioned him that flying too near the sun would cause the wax to melt. But Icarus became ecstatic with the ability to fly and forgot his father's warning. The feathers came loose and Icarus plunged to his death in the sea.

Icarus, The Dead Legend (They Don't Tell You Everything)

-I-
Imprisoned. Wrongly imprisoned. Daedalus paces the beach.
Icarus stands at the edge of the ocean. He is young. Unworried. Carefree. Reckless.
Daedalus sees the wings of the birds that circle far above.
"If only we could fly."
Tired of standing still and watching his father worry, Icarus picks up feathers that have fallen and runs, waving them in his fists. He is carefree. He leaps and the feathers flutter.
Daedalus smiles.
"We have work to do, son."
Icarus doesn't want to work. He drags his feet as they enter the labyrinth. He casts longing glances at the sun glinting on the sea.
They are busy all through the dark night.

-II-
The sun is rising as they exit the labyrinth.
Daedalus worries.
"The wind is not yet strong enough."
Icarus was told that they were going to fly. His eyes are filled with stars and his bones feel as light as the feathers on his back.
He does not want to wait.
"Wait."
Icarus jumps up and down. Impatient. Reckless.
"We will fly at noon."

-III-
Icarus was not as young as they tell you. He was not a little boy. He was reckless, yes, easily won over, impatient, careless. But he was old enough to know better. Under ordinary circumstances, he would have known better than to chase the sun.

- IV-
Noon approaches. Icarus is eager. Daedalus worries.
"The wind is strong enough. My son, we will fly."
Icarus leads the climb to the top of the cliff. Daedalus checks and double checks straps.
"My son, my son. Remember my words.
Do not fly too close to the sun. The wax will melt."

-V-
(This is all they will tell you of the father's words.
They warn against aiming too high.
They warn about the heat.
Passion could burn the world down, they say. )

-VI-
"My son, do not fly too close to the sun. The wax will melt and you shall fall.
But take care and do not fly too low. The sea spray, the foam, the waves, will weigh down your wings and you shall fall.
Do not fall."

-VII-
They fly.

-VII-
The sun is overhead. Bright, yellow, warm. Icarus never knew cold until he tasted the sun.
He never knew anything could be so bright
So warm
He never thought he could be so cold
His wings angle, and he catches a draft of air going up.

-IX-
Daedalus shouts, warning against the heat.
It is hopeless.
He knows it's no use.

-X-
Icarius hears his father. He throws his head back and laughs. Recklessness surging in his heart and lifting him just as much as the wind does.
He feels the wind blow back the dark curls from his freckled cheeks, the blue eyes the color of the sea.
He spreads his wings.
He flies.

-XI-
(They don't tell you he was unafraid and deliberate. They blame it on the sun. They claim it was a spell, a trance.
They don't tell you it was deliberate.
It is terrifying to believe, because we know it would be the same for us.)

-XII-
Daedalus knows he is gone.
He weeps, still flying across the sea to his homeland and his freedom.
His son is gone, half of his heart is at the bottom of the sea.
"My son, my son, I warned you.
Farewell, my son."

-XIII-
Icarus falls.
The wax runs hot on his back and feathers float past him as he plummets.
He laughs as the harness chafes his shoulderblades and death approaches. He is unafraid and careless. He had tasted the sun, and he thought that was all he needed.

-IXX-
The sea rushed to greet him. Waves caught him and tossed him until gravity pulled him down.
The sea is cold, cold, cold. So far away from the sun. Icarus lies back on the ocean floor and greets death.
Death does not take him. One so young, so full of fire, it cannot touch him without fear of being burnt.
Icarus waits.

-XX-
He does not regret. For the first thousand years, he does not regret.
But the thousand and first year, it comes.
Lying there in the silence, waiting, waiting, watching the sun filter through the water above.
What is he missing up there?
He cannot escape his thoughts. It is so quiet and he is alone.

-XXI-
(They never talk about after the fall. It is assumed he died. But so often, when one is assumed dead, that is not the case.)

-XXII-
Lifetimes later, they find him. Drag him up from the depths.
He struggles. Tries to explain, with a throat full of salt and a tongue clumsy with an ancient language.
He does not want to rise. Rising caused so much pain before. He cannot go upwards, back to the light.
They do not know what to do with him.
Icarus, they wonder. Is this the boy who the sun killed?

-XXIII-
He cannot explain that the sun did not kill him.
He is not dead.
The sun did nothing.
He chased light and warmth and love and life.
They abandoned him.
He cannot explain and they wouldn't understand.

-IXXX-
(They wouldn't believe him.
It is too terrifying to believe him.
We are all Icarus. We all have a part of his flaming spirit.
We all would chase the sun given the chance.
We all dream of flying.
Airplanes are proof of this, skydivers and parasailers. We want to fly but we must give ourselves restraints so that we do not chase the sun.
We have learned our lesson from the boy of the sea.)

-XXX-
(I am Icarus.
I ache for the sky. I long to fly.
The sun is so warm, so bright.
Down on this earth filled with hate and discrimination and violence and war,
I am so, so cold, and so blind.
The sun promises warmth.
I long to fly.)

I Have Absolutely No Inspiration For A New Blog Post, So Here's A Poem About Having No Inspiration

My brain is empty
Empty empty empty
I do not know what to write
I'm just
Spewing words

Hmmm. Let's find something to talk about
Favorites? My favorite color? Animal? Song? Book? Author? Art medium?
I like pencils and yellow and lots of music
And Brandon Mull and giraffes

Man, this poem has no flow
No editing, no editing, just write
I'm just
Spewing words

Here's a poem written
While not knowing how to write
It goes to show inspiration is necessary
For good work

But not always essential,
Because look, I've got a blog post here
Despite having no inspiration
I created a poem anyway

Sure, it isn't that good
It's not pretty and won't win a prize
But I finally finally finally published a new post
So that's out of the way and I'm good till next week

My brain is empty
Empty empty empty
I do not know what to write
I'm just
Spewing words

Another Short Story, part three

Hello again, dear readers! I know, I keep forgetting to post here every weekend. But this past couple weeks have been super busy, and today is the first day in awhile I've had time to do this. So here I am! About this story… to be honest, I didn't have a specific end goal in mind for this story. I didn't really plan this out. So I'm not sure how this is going to go. Just let me warn you, this isn't the best of my writing! Bear with me, though, and next weekend I'll have a better blog post.
Andrea taps her foot impatiently. "She probably isn't coming back, you know."
I sigh. "Give Clair a chance, Andrea. She's only been gone a minute."
"She's a number seven," she insists. "You can't trust someone that dangerous."
Naria groans. "Give it a rest already. She's probably just really smart or something. She doesn't act dangerous, anyway. And she seems to have it under control."
"I'm not sure," Surrea says quietly, "but I think we can trust her."
I nod, forgetting for the thousandth time that Surrea can't see it. "I agree with Surrea. We will wait here."
Someone knocks on the door before opening it. Clair walks in with a stack of folders and bundle of pens.
"After an argument with my father and some extensive research for loopholes, I managed to pull some strings so you guys can leave."
Andrea jumps up, but Clair holds up a hand.
"On the condition that I get a full profile on all of you for the records. I couldn't get rid of all of the procedure, but I lessened it. I just need your names and your abilities." She motions to me. "I have yours already, I assume. You're just immortal, right?"
I nod slowly. I wouldn't call it "just immortal", but I understand she means I don’t have other special powers. Clair opens one of the folders, writes something down, and asks for my signature. I write it down quickly and turn to the other girls.
"Co-operate," I whisper. Andrea rolls her eyes, but the others nod.
Clair looks at our group. "Who's next?" she asks, obviously straining to sound cheerful. I suspect this incident has been fairly stressful for her.
After some hesitation, Naria steps forward. "I'm Naria De'Andra. I… I can perform chaos magic."
For an instant, Clair looks almost afraid. The expression is gone instantly, hidden as she nods and writes in another folder with studied concentration. Naria notices, though, and turns away irritatedly.
Clair takes another folder. "Next?"
Andrea nudges Surrea, who stiffens slightly, but nods with resolve. "I am Surrea Hudson," she announces clearly, then hesitates, as if the next words are hard to say. "I can see people's worst fears," she adds softly.
Clair gives her a concerned, almost tender glance as she writes this down. "And you?" she asks, turning to Andrea, who crosses her arms defensively.
"I'm Andrea Derris," she replies with an edge to her voice. "I can tell, on a scale of one to ten, how dangerous someone is."
Clair scribbles in the last folder, looking a little puzzled by Andrea's hostile tone. "Is that what you meant when you said I’m a number seven?"
Andrea nods sharply. "The armed agents we met earlier were only number threes, if that's any comparison."
Clair quickly covers up her shocked expression by shuffling the folders and pulling three pens out of the bundle she brought.
"I need the three of you to sign these," she says quickly. "And then you can go."
The girls sign their respective folders rapidly. I can tell they're ready to get out of here.
"I'll walk you guys out," Clair announces. "To make sure there's no more trouble. Word might get around fast here, but I think my father is trying to keep this under wraps, so most of the agents probably haven't heard you're  free to go."
We follow silently as Clair leads us through a maze of hallways. I step behind Surrea and place both hands on her shoulders as we walk.
"Can you do something for me?" I whisper, barely audible.
She nods with a small sigh. "I'll do it. I'm curious, anyway. She's a level seven," she whispers back.
I stand behind her as she slips her blindfold off and stares at Clair.
Clair turns, looking at Surrea, an unreadable expression on her face. "Don't…"
Surrea stops abruptly, grey eyes wide, never looking away from Clair. She struggles for breath and steps backwards, running into me. I quickly pull the blindfold back over Surrea's eyes. She normally reacts badly when she takes off the blindfold, but this is the first time she's been unable to breathe.
Clair is walking towards us quickly. "Is she okay?" she asks worriedly, looking at me.
"I’m okay," Surrea replies for me. "But…"
Clair takes a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I probably should have warned you."
"I shouldn't have intruded…"
"It's fine," Clair replies quickly, staring at the floor. After a moment, she looks back up with a forced smile. "Let's keep moving. The sooner we're outside, the better this situation will turn out."
After about ten minutes of walking, I put a hand on Surrea's shoulder.
"She's afraid of only three things," she whispers before I can ask.
I squeeze her shoulder encouragingly.
"She fears failure. She's terrified to lose somebody else the way she lost someone once. And…"
She shudders slightly.
Clair glances back, and I can tell she can hear what Surrea's saying. She doesn't try to stop her.
"You don't have to tell me the last one," I whisper. Surrea seems to be struggling to articulate Clair's third fear.
She nods and falls silent as we reach a set of double doors. Clair punches numbers into a keypad and leads us out into the fresh air and sunshine.
"If you need any sort of transportation, I'm sure I could call in a couple favors," she offers, but I shake my head.
"Naria can transport us," I reply confidently. "Thank you."
She nods. "I'm sorry about all of this. If it were up to me…"
I shrug. "You did what you had to."
Naria creates a portal and Andrea jumps through before the rest of us can do anything.
Clair watches her go, then turns to Surrea.
"I…" she starts, but Surrea holds up a hand.
"Do not worry about me," she says calmly. "I will keep your secret. If you are ever in need, let us know and we will help." She hands Clair a piece of paper with her phone number on it.
Clair nods and watches as Surrea steps though the portal. I wave to her as Naria and I walk through the portal together.

The last thing I see before the portal collapses is Clair, waving back.

Another Short Story (Part Two)

Chapter Two

Clair looks hurt. Naria quickly undoes the silence spell so that I can smooth things over. Naria, Andrea, and Surrea all look to me to fix the situation. It's always been like that.
"I can explain."
Clair crosses her arms. "I was going to get you out."
I hold up my hands in a disarming gesture. "We had a plan before you even captured me. I didn't have a way to tell them to call it off." I motion to the other girls.
Clair steps inside the room and closes the door. "Who are you?" she asks, looking at the other girls. I notice her eyes linger on Surrea's blindfold.
The girls look at me, and I nod to them.
"I'm Surrea."
"Andrea."
"Naria."
"I assume you three were the cause of the trouble in the east quadrant earlier?" Clair asks, leaning against the wall.
They look at each other uncomfortably.
"Yeah, that was us," Andrea admits.
Clair sighs. "I'll be back. Stay here, and I might be able to work something out."
"What if we break out while you're gone?" Andrea asks brightly.
Clair doesn't look amused. "Then you'll be caught again and put in seperate cells, with special measures taken to make sure you can't escape. Trust me, staying here is your best option. I'm just trying to help you guys."
"Because taking Arabella prisioner is helping us," Naria mutters under her breath.
Opening the door, Clair pauses for a moment. "To be completely honest, I have no idea why we took Arabella. It was not my call, and it wouldn't have happened if I were involved in planning this maneuver." She shakes her head with a slight smile. "Probably why I wasn't involved."
For half an instant, I notice just how tired she seems. She's so young. Who got her tangled up in this stuff? This business is no place for most adults, much less a kid like her.
Clair steps out of the door. "I'll be right back. Hang tight." She pulls it shut, and I hear the lock click.

Another Short Story (Untitled So Far)

Hello dear readers!
I know, I didn't post the last couple weekends... again. I was out of town/away from my computer last weekend and the weekend before, I was busy with some projects. But I have an idea for another short story, and I think/hope this one will be better than the last one I did. I originally was going to do a short story for Clair but then I got a cool idea for something else that works better for someone else (although I'm still going to put Clair into it). Anyway, here goes nothing!

                                                        Chapter One

My fingers work at the lock of my handcuffs as I sit alone in the interrogation room. They left me unsupervised. How silly of them.
Footsteps sound in the hall and I stop moving. The door opens and a young lady with auburn hair and piercing blue eyes walks in. She approaches the table and spreads a stack of photographs out in front of me. All of them are from multiple time periods. All of them have me in them.
"Who are you?" the lady asks.
I smirk. "I assume you have some sort of idea, considering you have me here."
She narrows her eyes slightly. "You're either a time traveler or immortal, or something else we haven't heard of. Which is it?"
"I'll tell you who I am if you'll tell me who you are."
She sits in the chair across the table. I notice how gracefully she moves. Odd thing to take note of, I know, but I'm used to perceiving such strange things.
"My name's Clair," she tells me after a moment. "I'm an agent of A.R.R.O.W. And you are?"
"Arabella Werne. Immortal."
Clair writes something down on a clipboard. "Since then?" She points at the oldest photograph, from around the year 1826.
I shake my head. "Before that. About... let's see... I was a kid when Rome fell... I became immortal when I was about twenty... so pretty close to a thousand and five hundred years ago."
She blinks. "That... is a long time," she manages after a moment.
"I noticed."
Adding a note to her clipboard, Clair seems a little disturbed. I wonder what kind of experience she has with this sort of thing. She seems pretty young to be in an organization like this. She can't be younger than sixteen.
A shuffling noise comes from the ventilation shaft above. Clair doesn't seem to notice.
"Well," she says after a moment. "I think that's all, so I'll go and check in with my boss and make sure there's nothing else I need to find out, and then we'll see about getting you out of here. I'll be back."
She stands up and leaves the room, taking the pictures and her clipboard with her.
Exactly three minutes later, an overhead ceiling panel slides to the side and three other girls drop into the room. I'd managed to pick the lock on my handcuffs, finally, and I stand up and rub feeling back into my wrists.
"You guys were too loud," I complain. "I thought she'd hear you moving around in the air vent."
One of the girls, Surrea, shrugs. I notice her white blindfold is smudged with dust. "We tried to stay quiet."
"But Naria kept bumping me," Andrea explains energetically, in a much too loud voice. Her dark purple hair is more messy than normal, and her pale violet eyes are wide with indignation.
Naira crosses her arms. "I tried not to." The small girl's sea-green eyes are narrowed slightly, and I notice a bruise forming on her right arm.
"Did you three have some trouble getting in?" I ask.
They look at each other. "No, not at all."
"You all seem to be in rough shape," I point out. "Come on, you guys have worked with me for years now. You know you can't hide anything."
"Okay, we may have run into a few soldiers on the way in," Surrea tells me.
Naria nods. "But we took care of them without much fuss."
"They were only number threes," Andrea relates.
"Let's get out of here," I announce. I'll find out exactly what happened later. "Naria, will you silence us?"
She nods and spreads her hands, a deep green shimmer surrounding the four of us. "Done."
I open the door. "Here we go."
"Actually, you're staying here. All four of you."
Andrea clutches my arms. "A number seven. I've never, ever seen a number seven," she whispers urgently.
"Clair," I smile, feigning unconcern. "Fancy seeing you here."

Poetry

Hello, dear readers!
Once again, I've lapsed in posting. Since my last blog post, we've moved to a new house, started soccer, finished the spring semester of co-op, and settled into new routines. But here I am! With a brand new blog post! So here's some poetry that's been stuck in my head for the past week.
Don't worry, this first poem is heavy, but there are softer ones afterward.

Antidote

Where is the antidote?
Where is the cure?
Are these problems real
Are we ever sure?

Here we go again
More gunshots in a safe place
More children hurt
More families torn

Here we go again
Another night of darkness deeper
Than the absence of sun
A night of fear, a night of unrest

Where is the antidote?
Where is the cure?
Are these problems real
Are we ever sure?

The problem is people are seen
Only as stastistics, "the majority of the population"
They forget we are humans with minds of our own
They forget we are people, broken, and with dreams

"Do not go quietly into that good night"
Truth-seekers are discouraged from their pursuit
If too many people know the truth
They will rebel

Rebel,
Against those who seek corrupted power
Rebel,
Against the misguided rules
Are the rebellious right?

Where is the antidote?
Where is the cure?
Are these problems real
Are we ever sure?

We are all misguided
We follow each other
And nobody knows where they're going
There are far too many lost sheep

Is there an antidote for the problems surrounding us
Are we all just going in circles
But look, we are good, we help others,
We restore other's faith in humanity

Who doesn't have hope for the future?
But who knows where we're going?
And all the questions are drowned out by the cries of others;
It's not fair, it's not right, we must be heard

We want equality but we're bringing the other side down
We want safety but we're fighting over guns
We want knowledge but we're allowing strife in schools
We want hope but we're destroying our country with hatred

Where is the antidote?
Where is the cure?
Are these problems real
Are we ever sure?

I'm no longer sure where this poem is headed
I don't have political views
I try to avoid getting involved in current events
But these things have been stuck in my head, I want to let them out

I'm looking on as if from the outside
I see the destruction we're causing
But I am not blinded to the good side,
The side that leads us to stand up for others

The side that tells us to pay for that person's food
The side that lets us forgive and forget
The side that leads us to professions such as doctors, nurses, policemen
The side that gives us justice and a longing for peace

A longing for peace.
That's what's driving us
We just want peace
We want to be okay

But there is hatred that seems stronger than peace
It seems to drown it out, quench it in blackness
But, in the small moments of the morning, in grey dawn light
In the last moments of sunlight, painted with gold, purple, pink streaks
In the stillness of the mountains
In the vast stretch of meadows
In the silence of the caves
In the life of the forest

Here we find peace, it is not gone
It has only retreated, hiding, till the day
The skies break open and we go home
It's only waiting

There is an antidote,
There is a cure,
There are problems, yes,
To be sure

But we can be okay
We can be safe
We can have knowledge--
We can have peace.

Poetry

There's poetry in my brain and I can't get it out
The worst writer's block I can have
Poetry is crashing like ocean waves in my head
And I cannot get it out

Something about the galaxies, yes
Inspired by Sun, by Sleeping At Last, that band I recently discovered
It's there--
"That we may fall in love every time we open up our eyes"

In those lyrics I find peace, because hey,
The universe was made for us,
The universe was made for me
So that I can be facinated by it, and by the nature of it's creator

Why not find peace in that?
I am loved by more than human hearts
Humans are fickle, they change easily, I know mine does
But the hands that created stars and galaxies beyond my imagination? They're so much more steady!

I love this band, they express my poetry better than I
I just can't get it out of my head, what to do?
Oh, look,
Somehow I wrote it

I wrote poetry! And listen,
The ocean waves in my head are quieter
It was driving me crazy
But look, these words on the page

They said what I wanted to say!
And I wasn't even planning on it
It just kind of happened
That's poetry for you.

Round, glowing in my window
Peaceful against tossing tree branches
Obscured by a silver cloud, now reappeared
Sending threads of sound into the Earth

A soft song, ethereal
Heard only by people like me
The sleepless, gazing out the window
The dreamless, with pale moonlight on their face

It brings peace to those with darkened hearts
Brought down by the earth's gravity
It lifts, with gravity undone,
The souls blackened by the dust of the earth

And like a soft rain
Its light falls on the skin
Brightens upturned eyes
Caresses broken hearts

A round, glowing moon watches the night.

A Quick Post

Hello dear readers,

I'm super sorry I haven't posted in the past two weeks! Things have been really crazy around here, especially with us beginning to move. And last week, my brothers and I went on a mission trip. My original plan with today's blog post was to talk about that, actually, and I wrote about half the post before my brain went kaput. I will later finish writing that and post it, either tomorrow or next weekend. But for today's post, here's some poetry and aesthetic stuff.

I have poetry in my soul
And romance in my veins
And stars in my eyes
And words in my brain
And I have beauty in my hands
And an ocean in my lungs
And deep deep deep inside

Fear Me
I am stronger than you think
I am smarter than you believe
I am more beautiful than you can see

I am more, I am strong, I am enough
It took me awhile to find this out
But because of that I am more dangerous
Fear me,
Because I know who I am
